Cool information on Sicilian Pastries

Sicilian cakes are popular worldwide. If you are planning a trip to Sicily, try the Sicilian pastries. Sicilian food, even candy are considered healthy. The island has a variety of dishes listed and wines. It is sometimes referred to as Gods Kitchen, because the ingredients are rich in flavor, but affordable for the general population. Perhaps the most famous Sicilian pastries are cannoli. These are tube-shaped shells of fried dough filled with a sweet, creamy filling, which usually includes ricotta cheese. A less traditional choice for mascarpone filling, similar to cream cheese. This filling is combined with vanilla, chocolate, pistachio, wine, rosewater or other flavorings. Some cooks add chopped citron, candied citrus peel. Cannoli originated in the Palermo area as a treat during Carnevale season.

Seafood and pasta are staples of Sicilian food, although other types of meat are available, including goose, goat, rabbit, turkey and lamb. There are a variety of cheese made from sheep's milk, milk which originated on the island. Pecorino Siciliano and Caciocavallo are two variants. Caciocavallo has a taste similar to Italian Provolone.

Besides sampling Sicilian food, so do not forget to try the wine. DAvola Nero, or black Avola, the most important red wine grape in Sicily. Avola grapes are dark in color, almost black, hence the name. Avola is actually a town in the southern part of Sicily. Several flavors blended with grapes. So there is a wide selection to choose from.

One of the most famous Sicilian pastries are Ciarduna Siciliana. Like Cannoli, originated in Palermo. The shell is made of almond paste and filled with ricotta and mascarpone. It can be covered with chocolate or icing sugar. Pignoli's Sicilian Cookies are also made of almond paste and topped with pine nuts. They are a traditional Christmas treat.

Bruccellati, which literally translates to a little bracelet, Sicilian cuisine is another favorite for weddings and Christmas. Soft dough is rolled and filled with figs, dates, nuts or other ingredients. The dough is then bent to shape to form a bracelet, hence the name, little bracelets.
